Teasing Tight Players into the Action

Filed under: Casinos + Gambling, Great Fun, Web Of Games — admin at 9:39 am on Wednesday, June 16, 2010

Though aggressive poker players know how to scare tight players with big bets, tight players are typically not profitable for aggressive types. You can steal the blinds from them, and scare them off pots to create some dead money, but rarely will they pay you off. Is there any way to exploit these players?

First of all recognize that there are two types of tight - aggressive and passive. Each are easy to identify -passive tight players play very few poker hands, rarely call pre-flop raises, and happily check. They are afraid of losing and taking the initiative. When they are in the action, they have strong hands. With these types you can open up your hand range against them and use scary bet sizes to chase them away. Mix more bluffing into your game, but remember to get out when they call a raise. These folks don’t fool around, they’ve got the goods.

Tight aggressive players on the other hand can be more profitable. They don’t play many poker hands and usually come in with a raise when they do. There will be bigger pots with these players, but you are going up against strong hands. They are not easily bluffed because they only play strength and avoid speculative play. Look for raggy flops when they are in a pot because most likely they bet with premium face cards or an Ace, and the flop has missed the TAG’s hand.

Beyond Tournament Skill - Tips on How to Make it to the Money

Filed under: Casinos + Gambling, Great Fun, Web Of Games — admin at 9:03 am on Thursday, June 3, 2010

Winning poker tournaments take both skill and a bit of luck. There are other factors to consider too and that is your discipline and attitude.

When you are playing tournaments, especially those likely to last for a long time, keep these tips in mind:

* No alcoholic beverages - if you’re there to really win, then you have to keep your thinking sharp. Alcohol impairs judgment.

* Stay hydrated and nourished - either bring water and snacks with you or take breaks and buy some.

* Practice patience - one wrong move can cost you the tournament. Smart poker players never chase. Instead, they wait for good hands and play them aggressively. Be selective about what hands you play.

* Stay focused. When you re not involved in a hand - and you won’t be in most - then pay attention to what the others players do and how they play hands. Try to recognize patterns and predict what they are holding.

* Don’t enter an online poker tournament unless you are rested and basically feel good. You are going to need some stamina to last.

* Resist the suicide impulse to go all-in when you feel frustrated or just unbeatable when you get pocket Aces. Any hand can be beat. Give careful though to shoving before you do go all-in.

* Plan for luck to come your way. Everyone gets lucky once in a awhile. Most likely you will hit a few lucky hands, so stay calm and think about how to maximize the chips you win. al I rgHmme anyone and are probably presenting decent pot odds for a call.

* Frequently firing big blast bluffs at the other players often backfires when you do run into an opponent with a strong hand. Bluffing just for bullying sake will get you caught in some tough situations when you run up against a rock.

* Bluffing works best when the table sees you as a tight player. If you have been consistently folding your hands as if you hate to ever part with a chip, then the occasional bluff will more likely be successful.

* A naked bluff - with complete raggy cards - from early position is very risky. It is better to attempt a bluff with hand that can improve such as straight and flush draws.

Tournaments Tell You when to Quit

Filed under: Casinos + Gambling, Great Fun, Web Of Games — admin at 11:07 am on Monday, May 3, 2010

Tournaments Tell You When to Quit I’ve got a friend who’s an excellent poker player-he’s always winning the home games that we play, and he owns most sit ‘n go tournaments at our local online poker venues, but he just can’t seem to win at cash games. Often, he’ll do well for a while, usually building up a stack several times his initial buy-in before long, but just about every time he plays in a cash game, he winds up dead broke. After a while, he recognized a pattern-he’d do well in tournaments, but poorly in cash games. It seems that my buddy doesn’t know how to quit while he’s ahead-no matter how much money he wins, he almost always winds up going all in at the wrong time. Turns out that he just needed some structure in his life, say the structure that a poker tournament provides. With cash online poker games, it can be hard to know when to quit, but tournaments don’t give you the option-instead of having to know when to quit, a tournament tells you when the game is over. For players like my friend who can’t walk away from the table, it might be a good idea to stick with tournaments so you’ll have a definite end in sight.

Top Five SNG Tips, Late Rounds

Filed under: Casinos + Gambling, Great Fun, Web Of Games — admin at 4:28 pm on Friday, April 16, 2010

1. In the late rounds, especially on the bubble, the online poker blinds are worth a lot more. With the increased value, it’s worth it to raise with almost any two viable poker cards on the button, one off the button, and two off the button when you are folded to. You’ll be surprised how often people will lay down, especially on the bubble of the money, to a position raise, wanting to move up in money. 2. The times you successfully steal should pay for the times you get reraised. As earlier, when position raising, if you get checked to on the online poker flop, continuation betting is usually correct, unless you suspect a check raise coming. If you do bet and get raised, you can always fold. 3. You don’t want to overcommit to a marginal hand. Because the blinds are higher you should get more value out of stealing, but you also have to consider raises from others in early position as worth giving credit to. 4. As less players remain, the value of hands go up. Pocket 10s with two players left is different than the same hand with a full table. So is king queen. Applying pressure wins pots when cards don’t come.

How to Become a Poker Coach

After you have mastered poker technique and are winning consistently at your favorite stake, you may want to consider becoming a online poker coach. Poker coaches provide new players with the knowledge that they need to succeed at the table. To be a good poker online coach you need to be able to blend poker prowess with teaching ability. The first step for any potential poker coach is to see if they have the ability to teach poker. Teaching poker is a very different ball game then playing on your own. I would suggest that you try teaching poker to your friends first. If you can teach them a new skill or a new strategy effectively, then you may have the raw skill to instruct people who are not already biased in your favor. After that, you need to start small. Try advertising on small poker forums for new clients. At this point you are just trying to build your resume and references. Keep your prices low to help your client list grow. Only after you have a god solid base should you advertise more extensively. Remember that a poker coaching career is not built overnight. It is a long, slow process, but can pay off in the end.

Everyone is guaranteed to win a prize when play the e-lottery system. You’re automatically assigned a team follwing your buy into the El Gordo Lottery syndicate. Meet the November Nine

This year’s World Series of Poker final table November Nine includes both amateurs and professional players.

Chip leader Darvin Moon will be hard to beat, with a huge stack of 58,930,000 chips. He is an amateur recreational player from the state of Maryland, and owns a small logging company. He won his WSOP seat by playing in a satellite tournament of poker online. He credits his placing and big stack to simple good luck as the field narrowed to just a few and he got great cards that propelled him to chip lead.

Eric Buchman has the second largest stack at 34,800,000 chips. He comes from New York, and has already earned a million dollars from playing online poker tournaments, so he is no stranger to the competitive pressure. He was the runner-up winner in the 2006 WSOP $1,500 tournament and just missed winning a bracelet.

Steven Begleiter has 29,885,000 chips. A lifelong poker online player, he also won his WSOP entry through a home-game league. The league members are going to share 20 percent of whatever Begleiter win, so expect some loud cheering from his supporters during the final table action.

Jeff Shulman with 19,580 chips is a professional poker player, and an editor for Card Player magazine.

Dealing with the Ace-Jack

Filed under: Casinos + Gambling, Great Fun, Web Of Games — admin at 11:19 am on Monday, October 5, 2009

The Ace-Jack combination often finds itself on the top ten lists of Texas Holdem poker starting hands. Technically, it is a solidly good hand that gives you lots of opportunities to win the pot. You have the option of building a straight, a flush if suited, and high valued pairs off of the community poker cards. You should definitely stay in the game with this hand and see how things shape out. It has potential to work out in your favor, but must be played properly. The best way to play an Ace-Jack in poker is cautiously. It has the potential to turn into a good hand, but it is not a good hand in itself. You need good cards on the flop to get a god hand. You should always raise on the blind if you have the Ace-Jack in your hand. There is, however, one giant exception to the rule. If you raise on the blind and then get called, watch out. Someone out there has a much better hand than you. This is your chance to fold and still walk away with some of your bankroll. You will lose the blind with this strategy, but that is still less than if you see your Ace-Jack all the way to the showdown.
