Football fans can get to see all of the games this year

Filed under: School of Sports — admin at 12:47 am on Monday, July 7, 2008

The ever-increasing season ticket prices means a lot of fans struggle to watch all of their team’s matches. With the price of even just a championship season ticket being around £400 most fans can struggle to foot the bill, even if their team isn’t in the expensive premiership. This will mean that football’s best fans wont be able to support their team, just simply because they can’t afford it.

But football fans have been offered a new solution. Barclays bank (sponsor of the premiership) has offered a great way for you to buy your season ticket this year. If you purchase any football season ticket with the new Premiership Barclaycard (http://www.barclaycard.co.uk/champion/football_credit_card.html ) and it costs more than £250, you’ll benefit from 0% interest for as long as it takes to pay off.

The Premiership card also offers 10 pairs of tickets to be won each month during the football season, by just making a transaction on your football credit card each month to be entered into a prize draw.

And with more and more clubs from the premiership making it in to Europe fans can find it even more and more expensive to support their team. But, if your club does make it into Europe, don’t you want to be there to see them! The Premiership credit card also offers help when you’re abroad. You can use your credit card anywhere in the world, and if you lose your card whilst abroad, Barclays offer an emergency card replacement service, and you won’t be charged a cash handling fee for the service.

But with having to work all week, and enjoying the football at the weekend, who has time to go and apply for a credit card? With Barclay’s card you also have the option of ordering your credit card online (http://www.barclaycard.co.uk/champion/credit_card_online.html ), which will save you time and give you more opportunity to keep up with the football stats.

With football becoming more and more about money at least we, the devoted fans, can still afford to do what matters to us - enjoy the football and support our team.

Free Basketball Picks Jan 15: Lebron James Should Run Portland Out of the Building

Filed under: School of Sports — admin at 4:32 pm on Sunday, June 8, 2008

Three Free Basketball Picks for Sunday.

Free Pick 1 Best: Knicks @ Raptors: Can you believe that at this time last year the Knicks were actually leading their division? Both New York and Toronto are trying to take advantage of their weak division and make pushes to playoffs. While the Nets have looked awfully good lately, New Jersey is injury prone and will fall off eventually. When they do, these two teams could be waiting. So in the fight for division supremacy this game is important. Predicted Score: Toronto wins 115-110

Free Pick 2 Runner-up: Cavaliers @ Blazers: In watching Cleveland play, you get the feeling that they should be a run-and-gun team like the Phoenix Suns. Eric Snow is a half-court PG and slows down the game more than Jeff McInnis did. They should run Portland out of the building, but they don’t score enough to do it and there’s only 3 games played on Sunday. Predicted Score: Cleveland wins 102-94

Free Pick 3 Blowout: Magic @ Kings: When a fast-paced team and slow-paced team come together they form a game that I’d call a blowout. No Steve Francis is big trouble for Orlando. This team will have trouble reaching 80 without him. They are in the bottom five in scoring and taking away Steve’s 20 Points Per Game will hurt. Predicted Score: Sacramento wins 103-79.

The Key To Better Golf

Filed under: School of Sports — admin at 10:30 am on Saturday, April 26, 2008

Golf experts do agree on something. It’s not possible to play a
good stroke if your balance isn’t maintained throughout the
swing. Keeping your balance sounds pretty simple. But it’s nigh
impossible when you have a death grip on the club, your arms and
shoulders are stiff and you’re trying to hit the ball with every
ounce of strength can muster.

Beginners are often warned to not try to hit the ball so hard. A
little energy well directed and smoothly applied will drive the
ball father than a monstrous effort that ends up not connecting
the ball at the center of the club. If you’re balanced, you have
more freedom when hitting the ball.

You want to keep your head in one spot, your eyes on the ball
clearly. Actually the steadier you keep your head in one spot,
the better you see the ball. This is all part of creating your
foundation of balance. Anything that tips you off balance makes
it impossible to see the ball clearly. You must keep your head
still and not move it from the spot in which you start.

You can’t have your body rigid and your muscles tensed if you’re
wanting to maintain your balance. Unless you relax your muscles,
your head is going to move.

Practice in front of a mirror and you will see that your muscles
really do need to be relaxed in order for you to keep your head
still during a swing. No two people have the same frame or
physique. So you have to work out some things for yourself. But
always start with the foundation of keeping your head in one
position. If your head is still, you can see the ball clearly
and you will turn your hands at the right instant.

Just by keeping your head perfectly still you’ll correct a lot
of faults. You can’t grip your club incorrectly without at some
point disturbing your balance and moving your head. And you
can’t keep your balance unless you follow through correctly.

If your mind is concentrated on keeping your balance and keeping
your head still, you won’t overswing or jerk your club away. You
won’t put forth too much effort forth at any one point. You
won’t be stiff and you’ll have a smooth, even rhythm to your
swing and a nice finish.

Balance really is the cure-all for many faults of golf. It takes
time before you see improvement, so be patient. Think about
keeping your head still and maintaining your balance at all
times and you will have a foundation for an excellent golf game.

Time for Brown, Pistons to break up

Filed under: School of Sports — admin at 11:06 pm on Thursday, April 10, 2008

This relationship has all the plotlines of a soap opera, or the
Jerry Springer Show depending on your tastes. You have the
Casanova (Brown) who has been with all the chicks (NBA and NCAA
basketball teams). He falls in love a couple years back with the
newest fling (the Pistons). And it looks like he’s just about
ready to settle down into a life of monogamy until the young
hottie in the Daisy Dukes (Lebron’s Cavs) begin their
flirtatious ways. But, after that would-be couple doesn’t come
to fruition, the legendary Broadway starlet (the Knicks) is soon
waiting in the wings to catch Larry the Casanova on the
basketball rebound.

Okay, enough with the dramatics. But, this whole Larry and the
Pistons saga have almost gotten this silly. Larry wants the team
to “wait for him” during his treatment for bladder problems. One
day, it’s a crisis; the next day, it’s not. If it’s not his
physical condition, Larry is upset that the team doesn’t
“appreciate” him. And you wonder why I compare this to something
you’d see on afternoon television, just no “baby mommas” and DNA
tests, please. It’s time for these two sides to break up
“mutually” on “good terms” on the basis of “irreconcilable
differences”.

Larry Brown gave the Pistons what they wanted, and the Pistons
did the same for Brown. Detroit is on top of the NBA world, by
winning the Championship in ‘04, and almost repeating in ‘05.
This squad has free agents to resign, young players like Darko
Milocic to develop, and if this pissing match in the public
continues, the Dynasty window in Detroit will begin to close
much quicker than it should. It’s a testament to those players
how well they stayed focused during the Playoffs when Brown had
one foot already out the door.

These two sides met yesterday, reaching no definite conclusion
that we could tell. On Thursday, they get together again. If
Brown stays, these hints and rumors will continue from today
until the day he finally does leave. This is Larry Brown we’re
talking about; he’s always on the way out the door. Today is the
day to put this lunacy to an end. Larry walks away, to either
address his health issues, or more than likely, go coach the New
York Knicks, and Detroit goes ahead with plan B, the hiring of
Flip Saunders, and gets prepared for the 2005-06 NBA Season.

But, please make your mind up today, guys. Isiah Thomas is
waiting impatiently for your decision.

The Effect of 4D on the Barrel Racing Industry

Filed under: School of Sports — admin at 10:42 pm on Thursday, April 3, 2008

Originally an Open race where everyone ran together, beginners and professionals alike, barrel racing has now grown to having divisional races. The new 4D format allows everyone an opportunity to place and win at events, and even bring home some extra cash. But has this had a negative or positive effect on the industry?

The plus side of this for competitors is they now have more of a chance to be in the money. You do not need to have the fastest horse to place, but the fastest horse is going to bring home the biggest purse. With these divisions it seems the horse market has grown as well. Now you can sell a horse that is 2D/3D with the potential to be a 1D horse within in weeks if not days after he is up for sale. However, the way he ran his 2D races may not compare to the way you want to place in 2D at different events. He may have been a consistent 2D horse at a local saddle club, but taking him to larger shows he may struggle making it in 3D/4D. Be sure to check his record against other shows. Arenas, ground conditions, and pattern size all can vary on any certain day, causing your time to be different. But the benefit of that is you can sell a horse that is a few seconds off the usual winning time and still make a decent profit on him. Perhaps the reason people look for theses horses with the potential to be more is because of the 4D format. They can still place and win money while trying to improve their horses run, and they tend to be a bit cheaper then a winning 1D horse.

With this format, the purse can be larger by the number of racers there are in the sport now. Inexperienced people feel comfortable going to races and competing, even if it is with some of the best riders in the state. Often times races have an added jackpot of $100, $500, $1000 and up. Who wouldn’t that seem appealing to? But, some competitors with the capability to place and win in the 1D are displeased with the additional of the 4D and sometimes 5D races. It causes their purse to be smaller, and the chances of winning like they are used to could not be in their favor. Although, this is not reason to put down the riders in the lower divisions. If it wasn’t for the divided classes, they probably wouldn’t be bringing home enough to cover their entry fees, and their 1D horses wouldn’t be worth what they are today.

The 4D barrel race has become popular with all associations and even saddle clubs, who now hold 3D or 4D barrel races along with their regular shows. Events with added money are appearing in every state across the country, more every year. Even if you do not compete in a larger association, you have the opportunity to compete in one of these divisional events and have an insight to what is really all about, and if your horse has what it takes to be a contender.

Whether it is a positive or negative impact on the barrel racing world, it is up to you. But think how it would be if there was no 4D races. Everyone in the same class, and they only pay-out to 8th place if that. But with the additional races there are now, the advancement in barrel racing tack and training, and the way horses are bred, trained and sold, it seems that divisional racing has had a very positive effect on many areas of the horse world.

Billie McNamara has been barrel racing for 14 years, competing and winning in several events. She offers coaching and training in barrel racing and information can be obtained from her at brrlrcer3@maine.rr.com or her website, http://www.barrelraceinmaine.com

Four Little-known Baseball / Softball Training Secrets, Part 3

Filed under: School of Sports — admin at 12:34 pm on Saturday, March 29, 2008

Train Your Trunk and Your Upper Body Equally

Everyone knows that you use more of your body than just your arm to throw a baseball or softball. Yet, when I walk through a gym I always see ball players spending most of their time “working” their upper body. If their motivation behind training this way is that they think this will help their arm strength, well, they are largely mistaken.

Studies show that the split between how much you use your arm and trunk to make an overhand throw to be 53% arm and 47% trunk. And, that’s defining “arm” broadly to include shoulder and chest muscles.

IN OTHER WORDS, IT’S ABOUT A 50-50 SPLIT!

This key bit of information has important ramifications for how you should structure your strength and conditioning program as a ball player. Every position requires overhand throwing (except softball pitching) so properly training to enhance arm throwing strength will make any ball player more valuable to their team. No doubt you know of coaches who have their pitchers perform Long Slow Distance running (or bicycling). Well, these coaches correctly realize that the trunk and legs are important to throwing. What they don’t know are the appropriate conditioning principles to train these body parts so as to directly benefit the pitcher during game performance - which is the point, is it not?

Whether you’re a pitcher or a position player, you need to train more that just your upper body. You need to condition the muscles that support your trunk or core, such as your back, abdomen, and legs. Doing so, combined with good throwing mechanics, will reduce the stress on your throwing arm and allow your lower body to contribute more POWER throughout your entire throwing motion.

THE RESULT?

Fewer arm injuries and increased throwing velocity.

That’s why it’s so important to have a well-designed conditioning program that works both your upper body and trunk area, in-season and off.
