Limited Handset Approach of Apple Inspires Other Mobile Manufacturers
Toeing the line of Apple, mobile phone companies including Nokia have decided to decrease the number of handset models in the market.
Initially, mobile phone makers released a number of models in the market with nuanced differences from the previous models. This approach aimed at attracting attention of customers with one or the other feature of their handsets. According to recent statistics on mobile phones, Apple’s iPhone has approximately 3% of the global share of mobile market to itself. This is definitely a huge share for one handset and it is forcing other mobile manufacturers to rethink their strategy of handset production.
Manufacturers like Nokia have now decided to limit the number of models, especially at the higher end of the mobile market, and to focus on sales of these models in addition to reducing overall costs in the process. Nokia has already announced reduction of models in its smartphone range for next year, while Motorola has gone one step ahead and has reduced the number of sets in development for 2010.
There might be a reshuffling of entry prices for many of these handsets, but at the upper end of the mobile market, we are most likely to see just a few sophisticated models. However, this seems to be another step in the already set scenario for the smartphone market that is dominated by a few players, namely iPhone, Palm Pre and a couple of models from Blackberry.
With the ever growing popularity if such handsets and the increased use of mobile broadband devices, competition is fierce. Mobile Broadband Genie can help if you are new to mobile broadband, or simply wish to compare mobile broadband deals and service providers.
